Dr. Bo Yang is an Assistant Professor in Department of Urban & Regional Planning at San José State University. Yang’s GIS page aims to share research progress and resources of Geographical Information Science (GIS), Remote Sensing, and Environmental Science.

I have interdisciplinary education background with a B.S. degree in Applied Mathematics, an M.S. in Computer Science. I received my Ph.D. in Geography advised by Dr. Hongxing Liu at University of Cincinnati (UC). My research interests are: GIS, Remote Sensing, Spatial Statistics, UAV/Drone Mapping, Human-environment Interactions, and Citizen Science.

I work with Dr. Timothy Hawthorne co-leading an NSF&Smithsonian collaborative coastal mapping project. This project is one of the earliest attempts to employ UAV remote sensing in coastal management and conservation across 23 degrees of latitude, from Alaska to San Diego. We developed a quick scanning protocol to use high resolution drone image monitoring the spatial and temporal dynamics of the seagrass beds.

The other part of my research focuses on spatial data science in GIS and remote sensing. I developed and implemented a new geostatistical (ST-Cokriging) method to assimilate multi-source data for forecasting and hindcasting spatio-temporal environmental & societal processes, such as satellite data fusion and sharpening, urban heat island effects measured with remote sensing, and urban crime prediction. Compared with previous image fusion/assimilation algorithms, this new machine learning method is more accurate with its additional capabilities in filling missing data and uncertainty estimates.

I am an FAA part 107 remote pilot maintaining an open-access UAV/drone training course for coastal UAV mapping. I have been working in multiple participatory GIS projects with students and community engagement, such as NSF REU, RET, and K-12 outreach. I also engaged in GeoBus project, a mobile geospatial technology learning lab for K-12 and higher educations. Besides of doing research and teaching, I like fiddling with tech gadgets and playing basketball.
